THE COMPANY

Sphragis has operated in the field of restoration, conservation and reproduction of the heritage of seals housed in archives, libraries and museums from the beginning of the 1980s.

It was initially called after its founder Bruno Becchetti, then R.C.R. Sphragis snc, and today is called R.C.S. Sphragis srl and is still directed by Bruno Becchetti.

The laboratory is in Via del Gatto 302, 00188 Rome, Italy.

Preservation of the sphragistic documentary heritage mainly focuses on the restoration of wax seals, be they pendent, applied or attached, made of lead, paper, silver, or gold, as well as the documents they are secured to.

Sphragis revolves round the expertise and experience of Bruno Becchetti who was the Head of the Seal Restoration Laboratory of the Vatican Secret Archives for over twenty-five years.

Today he is assisted by a team of specialists working in the fields of

·     restoration where their technical skills are combined with their historical, scientific and cultural knowledge of seals,

·      conservation where their professionalism is enhanced by accurate in-depth research of materials,

·      reproduction where appropriate tools are used to perform state-of-the-art techniques.

The team has achieved excellent results not only due to the attention paid to restoration issues, but mainly thanks to the research, identification and attainment of optimal solutions for all problems related to the preservation of the archival heritage, especially seals.
